A wonderful Edwardian (ca1910s) era sterling golf trophy cup by London silversmiths Mappin & Webb! This commemorative piece is crafted in solid sterling silver and carries a golf inspired motif. Although it was produced in 1910, the cup was used as a runner's up trophy in 1913-1914. It has a classic goblet-style trophy design with three varying golf clubs leaning around the base. Hand engraved on the front of the cup is: K.C.C.? CAPTAIN'S GOLF CUP? 1913-1914? Runner up? A.L. STEIN. The surface of the silver has a wonderful natural patina which adds to the richness and depth to the images and the back is stamped with the Mappin & Webb makers mark and three English hallmarks including a "lion," which represents its sterling silver purity, the "uncrowned leopard head," representing that it was assayed in London, and the date letter "P," signifying the manufactured year 1910. A beautiful work of art the piece has exceptional craftsmanship and would make a special addition to any collection, particularly for a golf enthusiast!
Measurements: The silver trophy cup measures approximately 6" tall and has a diameter of 2 1/8" at the bottom and 2 1/4" at the top. The width at the base where the golf clubs stick out measure 2 5/8" at the widest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the sterling trophy cup is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the sterling silver or engraved message.
